Deck Repairs

The deck of a ship covers the vessel’s hull. In essence, it is the hull’s roof, operating as the primary surface f operations. Modern vessels have more than one deck within the hull, like a building has floors. These decks have different names based on their purpose and their levels.

The primary deck, also known as the upper deck, operates as a structural aid to the hull. In addition, it operates as a method of weatherproofing to the ship. Finally, it allows for the supporting of equipment and crewmembers. The primary deck operates as a lid to the hull, absorbing the compression, racking and tension forces. The deck is strengthened with fittings such as a bollard and capstans.

There are many types of decks depending on ship types. The most common ones are the forecastle, the lower deck, the main deck, the orlop deck, the poop deck, the bridge deck, the side deck, the shelter deck, the steerage, the tween, the weather deck, and the well duck, to mention a few.

A deck can be constructed with plating over metal beams and carlins. Then, the metal is welded twice, allowing for waterproofing. After the deck is constructed, it is welded to the hull, creating a single, unified structure.

Modern methods are used to operate the data provided by the testing and the information is then processed. Structural members can be corroded and worn out by a plethora of factors. Among these are the vessel’s age, its corrosion rate, and its corrosion margins.

Importance of Deck Repairs

Deck repairs are important, since they can aid in the prevention of damages to a ship’s hull. The most common types of damage to the vessel’s hull are holes, ruptures, and cracks. In addition, the vessel can suffer from indents, dents, and bulges, indentations, gashes, corrugation and scrapes.

The procedures concerning confined space entries and hot work must be followed before conduction operations. After that, the repairs can be conducted. Qualified personnel inspects the atmosphere with a test in order to avoid risk of fire, especially when operating close to the engine deck.
